My cat, Bindy, recently jumped onto my bed in the middle of the night with a live rat clenched in her teeth. Just as I turned on the light, she let it go. I leapt out of bed, slammed the bedroom door, and chased the rat from corner to corner — not entirely sure what I’d do if I actually caught it, which I didn’t. Bindy, meanwhile, seemed delighted by how animated I was over her gift, and sat by placidly as the rat scurried across the floor right in front of her. Eventually I pushed an ottoman up against the open window and retreated to the guest room for the night. By morning, the rat had mercifully let itself out through the open window. This drawing is part of my therapy. To Bindy…and the rats.
